Orleans County is proudly recognizing April as “Donate Life Month,” as part of the annual nationwide campaign, with the Donate Life flag flying outside the county’s Administration Building in Albion.  Throughout the month, those who have saved lives through the gift of a donation are honored and efforts are made to encourage more people to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.

“I am so proud of Orleans County residents, as we have 58 percent of those eligible signed up for the donor registry, which exceeds the state average,” said Orleans County Clerk Nadine Hanlon.  “But considering that there are more than 8,000 people waiting for organ donations across the state, I am hopeful more people will consider becoming a donor.  Just one organ, eye and tissue donor can save eight lives and enhance 75 more.”

Hanlon said 85 percent of those who sign up to be donors in New York State do so through the DMV and thanked her DMV staff for their continued efforts to raise awareness.   Those wishing to sign up for the registry can do so by visiting the DMV office or going to https://www.orleanscountyny.gov/government/county_clerk/department_of_motor_vehicles/index.php where there is a link to the state registry.
